The Lightning Network broke the 1,000 Bitcoin (BTC) threshold in August 2020 and the 2,000 BTC barrier in July 2021. The network's capacity has doubled in the space of 18 months. A layer-2 payment protocol built on Bitcoin’s base layer, the Lightning Network allows for near-instant transaction finality. The average and median transaction cost for sending Satoshis (the smallest denomination of a Bitcoin) over the Lightning is well under $0.01, proving it packs a punch as payment technology.
